Modularization of mobile shopping assistance systems (RFID shopping ROBOT)

Modularization of mobile shopping assistance systems (RFID shopping ROBOT)

A customer shopping process consists of several essential and optional tasks like payment or information retrieval. This paper presents an overview of the possible solutions in the field of Mobile Interaction that can be applied in order to perform these tasks in future applications based on current and upcoming communication and interaction technologies. The tasks are represented by several modules, like shopping list management, shopping basket management and payment. These modules conceptually describe the available opportunities to realize specific parts of a customer shopping process based on several technologies and customer behavior. In particular, a deep insight into solutions based on Near Field Communication (NFC) is provided. For the first time, the modularization of shopping assistance systems has been considered. It is a substantial advantage for the retailer as it enables the analysis of the benefits and drawbacks of technologies and services. Furthermore, it allows the investigation independent from basic technologies like RFID and barcodes. Regardless of the used technology, the modules can be linked with each other which allows a simple integration of several modules in a retailer's infrastructure. Depending on the usage context, several combinations of modules are more applicable than others. Exemplarily, two implemented prototypes are described illustrating how modules can be combined to handle the specific needs of a market

Exploring multimodal feedback for an NFC-based mobile shopping assistant

Exploring multimodal feedback for an NFC-based mobile shopping assistant

This paper explores how mobile devices can provide useful multimodal feedback during interactions with NFC-tagged objects. We exemplify our approach with a mobile shopping assistant that uses haptic-visual and audio-haptic feedback to inform diabetics about the agreeability of tagged grocery products. A preliminary laboratory study shows a preference for haptic-visual feedback which is regarded as more helpful, easier to learn and more pleasant to use. The results stress the usefulness of multimodal feedback for mobile interactions with NFC-tagged objects in this context and inform future work, e.g. about the expressiveness of different feedback modalities and patterns.

Indoor navigational aid using active RFID and QR-code for sighted and blind people

The aim of this paper is to describe a new Navigation technique to assist the blind and people with low vision to reach their destinations in an indoor environment. The proposed technique is based on our previous positioning technique using active Radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology. A Global Positioning System (GPS) does not work efficiently in indoor environments. This research produced a navigation service for sighted and blind people to assist them to reach their destination of interest via the shortest path. Tags were distributed at known locations and the mobile reader was carried by a user. The system role is to determine the shortest path to the destination which was indicated by a user. When the shortest path is calculated, the system indicates way points in the path which were represented by active tags in this scenario. Then the users are navigated to these points one by one via QR-Code till they reach their destinations. It was implemented in an indoor environment as a simulation system to navigate the user to particular offices with a successful shortest path identification rate and satisfactory navigation results were achieved.

Occupancy Monitoring Using RFID Technology for Efficient Building Lighting Control

Occupancy Monitoring Using RFID Technology for Efficient Building Lighting Control

The control of artificial lighting is a key parameter to be considered in buildings towards energy and cost savings. Efficient, need-based control of building lighting through occupancy detection using Passive Infrared (PIR) sensors has become a reliable and well established approach. However, the use of only PIR sensors for occupancy monitoring does not offer much savings and depends upon a building's type and use, and its occupancy levels. Accuracy of occupancy monitoring greatly affects building lighting control strategy and hence, percentage savings. Besides considering lighting control based on occupancy detection using PIR sensors, this paper presents a data fusion approach of passive RFID based occupancy monitoring with PIR. The proposed methodology provides an estimated 13% of electrical energy savings in one open plan office of a University campus building. Practical implementation of RFID gateways provide real-world occupancy profiling data to be fused with PIR sensing towards analysis and improvement of building lighting usage.

A RFID Based e-STOP Sign and Its Impacts to Vehicle Emissions

A RFID Based e-STOP Sign and Its Impacts to Vehicle Emissions

Traditional STOP signs at unsignalized intersections are easily blocked by trees, trucks and other obstacles, which will induce high risk of incidents and even extra vehicle emissions. The so-called Infrastructure-to-Vehicle (I2V) communications can automatically inform drivers of earlier awareness through in-vehicle display and audio device, which alternates vehicle driving behaviors and operation modes, and will possibly reduce vehicle emissions. In this paper, the feasible working range of the RFID based e-STOP sign within the smart guide signing system (SGSS) at unsignalized intersections is firstly tested, and its impacts on vehicle emissions are further identified. Test and emission estimation results indicate that the RFID based e-STOP sign can reduce vehicle emissions at unsignalized intersections, especially when vehicles make turnings.

Application of RFID Technology for In-House Drug Management System

Wearable object detection system for the blind

Wearable object detection system for the blind

The blind's capacities to navigate in a particular place and to organize their daily activities are of vital importance for their health and well-being. Organizing any kind of simple daily activity can be especially difficult; it is not easy for the blind to distinguish the different items, such as packaged foods and drug containers just by touching with their hands. RFID, or radio frequency identification, is a technology that can provide a support for improving the organization and orientation during the daylight activities. RFID uses radio waves to deliver data from a tag, which stores information, to a reader, which can elaborate the information making decisions. This technology is very useful in many different contexts such as scanning passports, shipments and automatic highway toll collecting. As the RFID technology stands out for its inherent technical nature of any basic RFID system, it may involve additional improvements for numerous applications in the field of health care. In this paper, a RFID device designed as a support for the blind in searching some objects is presented; in particular, it has been develop for searching the medicines in a cabinet at home. The device is able to provide to the blind some pieces of information about the distance and simplify the search; besides identifying the medicines, the device is able to provide the user an acoustic signal in order to find easily the desired product as soon as possible. It is noteworthy the fact that it gives the blind some items of information about the distance of a defined object, that is how near or far it is. This application is obtained using the RSSI (Received Strength Signal Indicator) value, measuring the power of the received signal of the tag.
